SPIRESPIRE-AMR | Tackling Antimicrobial Resistance in Pakistan
Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) poses one of the greatest global health challenges of our time, with the potential to cause 10 million deaths annually by 2050. Pakistan, with its large population and widespread misuse of antibiotics, faces a particularly urgent threat. SPIRE-AMR is building a robust database, driving research, and collaborating with healthcare institutions to reduce the impact of AMR in Pakistan and beyond.
Why SPIRE-AMR Matters
AMR threatens the effectiveness of life-saving antibiotics.
Over-the-counter drug sales, poor prescription practices, and weak regulation have accelerated resistance.
Studies show 85–90% resistance to third-generation cephalosporins in Pakistan.
Despite being a signatory to WHO regulations, Pakistan has yet to fully implement AMR containment strategies.
Without intervention, Pakistan risks becoming a hub for multidrug-resistant infections, jeopardizing public health and global travel.
SPIRE’s Approach for AMR
National AMR Registry
Developing a model database for universal reporting and periodic surveillance.
Research & Publications
Publishing studies on patterns of resistance in pathogens like Acinetobacter and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Collaboration
Open data sharing with vetted institutions and researchers.
Capacity Building
Educating healthcare professionals and raising community awareness about rational antibiotic use.
Policy Advocacy
Generating evidence to support stricter regulations on prescriptions, manufacturing, and drug sales.
Collaboration Opportunities
We welcome medical colleges, hospitals, researchers, and global health partners to collaborate in tackling antimicrobial resistance.

SPIRE AMR FAQs
What is SPIRE-AMR?
SPIRE-AMR is a research initiative focused on building a national database of antimicrobial resistance in Pakistan to guide treatment, policy, and awareness.
Why is AMR a serious concern in Pakistan?
Due to over-prescription, misuse, unregulated drug sales, and poor-quality antibiotics, Pakistan has some of the highest AMR rates in the region.
How does SPIRE-AMR collect data?
SPIRE-AMR uses tertiary lab datasets, anonymized specimens, and contributions from partner hospitals and institutions to build a central registry.
Who can collaborate with SPIRE-AMR?
Hospitals, researchers, and medical institutions can join by contributing data and participating in publications via the SPIRE-AMR MOU.
What are the benefits for collaborators?
Partners contributing at least 50 data points are eligible for authorship in SPIRE-AMR publications, gaining visibility and impact in medical research.
