SPIRESPIRE-Obs-Anesthesia-Pediatrics 2023
Project Overview
Anesthesia plays a crucial role in the safety of mothers and infants during childbirth — particularly in emergency cesarean sections. Yet, in Pakistan, there is limited research data documenting how anesthesia affects outcomes in such cases.
The SPIRE-Obs-Anesthesia-Pediatrics 2023 project bridges this critical gap by developing a database that records maternal and neonatal responses to anesthesia under various conditions. Data from five hospitals in Punjab and one in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are being compiled, offering the first structured insight into anesthesia outcomes within local healthcare settings.
This evidence will guide healthcare policy, clinical practice improvements, and academic publications to enhance maternal and infant care standards nationwide.
Why This Project Matters
Filling the Knowledge Gap
No existing data on cesarean anesthesia outcomes in Pakistan’s population.
Improving Maternal Health
: One of the highest maternal and infant mortality rates demands evidence-based change.
Clinical Training Benefit
Enhances local anesthetists’ skills in high-risk obstetric scenarios.
National Policy Relevance
Supports safer anesthesia protocols and hospital standards nationwide.
Sustainable Research
Encourages collaboration among hospitals, researchers, and statisticians for ongoing maternal health research.
Implementation & Impact
Multicenter Data Collection
Data collected from five hospitals in Lahore and one in Peshawar.
Maternal Health Focus
Detailed monitoring of anesthesia-related complications during cesarean deliveries.
Infant Outcome Tracking
Evaluation of newborn response and post-delivery recovery under varying anesthesia conditions.
Capacity Building
Training anesthetists and obstetric teams for accurate data documentation and patient monitoring.
Publication Preparation
Statistical analysis and manuscript drafting in progress, with five author slots open for collaborators.
Project Updates (2023–2024)
Update 01
Data collection complete for five hospitals in Punjab.
Update 03
Manuscript preparation is underway for 2024 submission.

SPIRE-Obs-Anesthesia-Pediatrics FAQs
What is SPIRE-Obs-Anesthesia-Pediatrics 2023 about?
It is a collaborative research study analyzing the effects of anesthesia on maternal and newborn outcomes during cesarean sections in Pakistan.
Why is this research important?
Because Pakistan lacks national data on anesthesia-related complications in childbirth, which limits healthcare improvement and training.
Which hospitals are part of the study?
Five large hospitals from Punjab and one from Peshawar are providing data for this project.
Which institutions are collaborating on SPIRE-GASTRO?
SPIRE partnered with Gandhara University, Peshawar to complete the largest study on acute watery diarrhea in Pakistani children
